Sacramental Program for Children

Sacramental Programme for Children

The Sacraments of Initiation begin with Baptism and continue with Confirmation and Eucharist.

At Baptism, Parents bring their child into God’s family.

At Confirmation the child is anointed by the Holy Spirit and the promises made by their parents at baptism are now made by the child.

In order to be Confirmed you have to first do your First Reconciliation.
These sacraments prepare our children for Eucharist (or Communion) when the child receives the body and blood of Christ in communion with the whole Church. Eucharist is the only one of the Sacraments of Initiation that we can, and should, receive repeatedly.

Parents are invited to register their child for the programme when they are 9 years old or in Year 5 at school. We believe that by waiting until the children are nine they have a much better understanding of the ideas presented to them and an awareness of what it means to be a part of God’s family.

As Parents and Caregivers, you are the first educators in faith of your children but you can’t do it alone.

Here at OLOF we have Fr Sam and a team of Catechists (Teachers) to guide you and your child through the Sacramental Programme. Behind this team we have another group of Parishioners who help to plan and run the two ceremonies that are a part of the programme. Our entire Christian Community are encouraged to pray for the children as they complete the programme.

Using the Diocesan books on Reconciliation and Belonging alongside our own experience as Catechists and Parents, we have put together a programme of learning that we believe is
interesting and enjoyable. We encourage the children to express their ideas and develop an understanding of their faith.

As we run the programme each year we find what works well and what doesn’t and then adjust the programme accordingly so as to keep it up to date and fresh.

The programme has 3 lessons on Reconciliation and then a reconciliation ceremony that the Parish is also a part of. We try to have this ceremony during Lent.

We then have 2 lessons on Confirmation, 2 lessons on Eucharist and then a final Ceremony involving the children and their families. We always try to have this Ceremony presided over by the Bishop of Auckland.
The programme is usually run between March and June each year.

Registrations usually open in November the year before and is advertised in the Parish newsletter which is handed out at Mass each week. The programme is very popular and we encourage you to get your child’s registration in as soon as registrations open.

The cost of the programme is $100.00 which covers all the resources, certificates, candles and Church decorations. However we do not wish to see anyone unable to attend the programme because of cost so do not let this stop you from registering. Please talk to Fr Sam about this if it is a concern.

We look forward to meeting you and your child and guiding you through the Sacraments.
